ACHIEVING GREATER ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL SUCCESS

“Mr. Mansfield really cared about the quality of work in AP Calculus, and about his students demonstrating their capabilities and pushing them to the limit, both academically and athletically. In Mrs. Draugsvold’s class I learned how to question authority as well as sources, and how to think about the world from my own perspective. I still think daily about some conversations I had in her class. I wouldn’t care about Hemingway if not for her.”

Ian was not only able to step out of his comfort zone at Winchendon, but to redefine it completely. He pushed into new territory, both academically and extracurricularly, and built strong bonds with his educators and classmates.
- Coming to Winchendon as a freshman who was still in his shell, Ian was able to explore new interests, find his people, and his niche. He initially thought he wanted to work in medicine, so he did a ColLAB shadowing at Heywood Hospital. This experience gave him a better understanding of the hospital system, as well as what people are going through and how they are cared for, especially in mental health fields… but ultimately helped him realize that he was interested in other careers.
- By joining the Ultimate Frisbee team, the Robotics team, and even the Super Smash Brothers club, Ian pushed himself in new ways and forged meaningful friendships and connections with both his peers and his teachers. Ian is now studying Biology at Gettysburg College.
