Being Drafted By the Yankees Capped Off A Remarkable PG Year For Nate Espelin
By the end of his post-graduate year at The Winchendon School, Kelly Butts-Spirito ’19 was interviewing fellow post-grad and baseball teammate Nate Espelin ’19 on the finer points of Dr. Freidman’s Trans-Atlantic Identities course. Butts-Spirito’s work in his Winter ColLAB producing a documentary – along with his natural curiosity, meant that faculty member Will Holby could easily call on him to lend a hand as he began to craft a new video story for the school. For Espelin, the easy-going Belmont, MA native, the interview was another step in a year he called “meaningful.”

From Dr. Freidman keeping him on his toes academically, to seeing himself on the cover of the New England Baseball Journal, through graduation and a successful post-season run at the Small School Championship, Espelin demonstrated the School’s core values daily. Those core values – Empathetic, Adaptable, Resourceful, Courageous, Resilient, Collaborative, Ethical, Responsible in his one year at Winchendon, Espelin found “the values [this year] taught me will last a lifetime.”
“I have so much to say about my experiences at The Winchendon School. So many stories, so many experiences, and so many people. This year truly did mean something and the values that it taught me will last a lifetime.” -Nate Espelin ’19
