This past week has been a very difficult one, and many of you are struggling with the events that have occurred in addition to the anxiety that has been a part of the pandemic already. The death of George Floyd and the protests that have followed have left so many of us devastated and extremely concerned for those involved and for each other. We are a strong community of diverse individuals with great hearts and discerning minds, and we must be conscious of how others feel as we individually deal with our anger, hurt, and fear. We have work to do as a society, and it will be a long road. However, as James Baldwin wrote, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
How can we help? We can help by listening to our students and continuing to support them as they navigate the current landscape that is occurring as a result of continued injustice and systemic racism.
We must be present for our students and our community as we all confront both prejudice and violence. We are here for you and hope that the values that we as a School hold dear–the ability to face difficulty courageously, to feel empathy for each other, to be resilient during the challenges that life throws at us–give you strength as you watch the news and think about the difference that we can all make in this world.
