Your school days are better…
...and you learn more...
...when you are interested
in what you are doing.
Ever wanted to spend your days with other students who are …
- Excited about what they are working on?
- Happy to be going to school with other students who appreciate and respect what you are interested in?
- Curious about a lot of different things?
- Have a range of diverse perspectives and interests?
At Winchendon, you will have traditional classes, but generally in smaller groups of 7-9 students so that your teachers know you well, understand what interests you, and can support you in the ways that you learn best.
You will also have the chance to work with other students and faculty helping address challenges in the community, solve problems, and bring about change.
There is time built into the schedule so that you can practice and pursue your interests and goals, whether you want to become a D-1 athlete, a Broadway-bound actor or musician, a coder or gamer, a social justice activist, a politician, an entrepreneur - or some combination. And if you aren’t sure what your real interest is yet, Winchendon and your friends will help you discover some of the possibilities.
Our Schedule helps create better days for you:
We build in considerable time each week and semester for learning what is most important to you. Twice a year, we set aside the regular schedule so that all students and faculty can pursue the topics that excite them most. We call these ColLABs, for “Collaborative Laboratories”, and these are where you will have the chance to either do a “deep dive” into a new topic that interests you with other students and teachers, or design your own independent study or internship.
Student-led Service Learning Projects
There is significant time set aside for student-led service learning projects each week. This is not something extra, but built right into the schedule just like any other class or activity.
We design the schedule so that you can pursue multiple activities without conflict. Want to play on a varsity sport and try out for a part in the musical? It’s easy. Want to do a great job creating a portfolio for art school, but also be part of the robotics, cross country or Model UN teams? No problem. Think that holding down a part time job is important? We are going to work to support that as well.
Daily Scheduled Support
We build in time each day for extra help. The last period of each day is called “Conference”– the time that any teacher can be found in the their classroom, so that you always know that they are there to help you get started on a paper or project, prepare for an upcoming assessment, or answer questions about recent classes.
If you think that you will benefit from extra assistance and guidance while you are working on your own in the evening, you will find teachers available in the dorms in MA and on the campus in NYC. There is also additional support available in small evening study groups where teachers will help you organize and prioritize your work and stay on task.
Friends, Fun and Food are Essential!
And then there needs to be time for the critical “3 F’s” – friends, fun and food. Want to grab lunch with some friends? …hang out and play video games? …get an early workout or some sunset frisbee in? …order a calzone or chicken wings with some buddies? …or just kick back and watch a video or listen to some music on your own. It’s all important, and we make sure that there is time for that as well.
Our weekends provide a balance to our jam-packed weeks: they’re a mixture of structured and down time, familiar routine and new experiences, time with friends, or time alone. Students can take advantage of our full schedule of sports, arts performances, field trips, or outdoor activities, or can take the time to rest, reflect and catch up. Our beautiful region straddling the NH border provides endless opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, ice skating, and nature—we even have a Birdwatching Team!—but we’re close enough to urban centers and world class shopping for students to get their city fix.
