Sports Philosophy

The Winchendon School’s athletic philosophy encourages participation by all students, whether in a competitive or intramural program. Winchendon students are generally required to participate in at least one interscholastic sport during the course of each year in order to experience the intense personal investment of being a team player. Regardless of the level of competition, our coaches emphasize the core values of teamwork, commitment, sportsmanship, perseverance and selflessness. These are habits that will serve you for the rest of your life – in college, in your career and in every aspect of your adult lives. And, we never lose sight of the importance of fun as well!

Depending on the sport and the level, you will find your teams competing with and often winning against some of the biggest names in prep school sports – Andover, Exeter, Northfield Mt. Hermon, Berkshire, New Hampton, Holderness, St. Sebastian’s, Albany Academy, Cushing, St. George’s, Greenwich Academy, BB&N, Worcester Academy and Thayer among many others.  Winchendon is a member of NEPSAC (The New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) as well as specific leagues by sport.

One of the great things about being on a varsity team at Winchendon is that you will get terrific coaching with more opportunities for playing time and leadership roles while competing at a high level. Many of our student-athletes choose to go on and play for NCAA on Division 1 teams in both men’s and women’s sports. But there are also many opportunities to try new sports and activities out, and this is actively encouraged.  Each season, there are the great accounts of the former hockey player taking up basketball, or a lacrosse player trying their hand at ultimate frisbee in the spring.  First-time skaters are often found careening around the rink as those new to golf are encouraged to take many swings at that confounding little white ball.  There is a lot of fun and camaraderie in trying a new sport with friends.

Then there are the facilities – well-manicured playing fields including a brand new one built in the fall of 2015, an indoor turf practice field, a hockey arena, four tennis courts, basketball/volleyball courts, and workout facilities in the Rotenberg Gymnasium, and a private 9 hole, Donald Ross-designed golf course.  Our students are also swimming, riding, biking and running locally.   More on facilities

Each year the athletic programs generate incredible stories, whether it be the student who is recruited by top colleges or the student who works his or her way up to the varsity team after taking up a sport for the first time at Winchendon, or the team that wins championships after many challenging games. There is a place in Winchendon’s athletic program for every student whether highly skilled or brand new t a sport.

Your teammates and coaches will not just be your friends but will just as likely be the person with whom you work on the technology project or the partner who has your back in a water fight or campus-wide game of humans versus zombies. You will form relationships that will last decades.
