Dear friends,
Now that the dust has settled after a long, successful winter, we want to take a moment and celebrate the NEPSAC, Power 5, and Junior Varsity Basketball teams for an unbelievable season. To our coaches and players, what an unforgettable journey it has been. While we fell short of the NEPSAC championship, and this still certainly stings, being a semifinalist in one of the most competitive and prestigious college preparatory programs in the country is a tremendous accomplishment. And the Power 5’s victory over a tenacious and talented We Believe Academy team was the perfect ending to their remarkable season.
Today, we have several other things to celebrate alongside this season of success. We celebrate the leadership of Kevin Kehoe, who announced that this season would be his last. While it might not be right to call this a retirement, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the tremendous impact he has had on Winchendon Basketball over the past 5 years. Kevin effectively restored and further elevated Winchendon’s storied hoops program.
We can also take a moment to celebrate the leadership and subsequent promotion of Kenny Green, who will take over for Kevin as the Head Coach of Winchendon’s NEPSAC AA basketball team. While Kenny is only in his second year at Winchendon, his commitment to character building through sport is central to his work on the court with our student athletes.
As we look ahead to 2024/25 and beyond, the structure of Winchendon Basketball will be more vertical in the organization of the program. We will continue to have a Recreational Junior Varsity program that will be a great opportunity for players passionate about basketball who are still refining their skill set. The second tier will be our Varsity Development Team, which will be made up of highly aspirational 9th and 10th graders who aim to matriculate into the NEPSAC College Preparatory Team alongside upperclassmen who are serious about basketball with the hope to play at the club or division three level in college. We will determine at a later date whether the Power 5 conference or an at-large NEPSAC schedule will provide the most appropriate competition, but the focus of the team will be explicitly on player development. The NEPSAC AA “Prep” team will largely consist of older students highly committed to top level play in college.
Thank you for your interest in and support of Winchendon Basketball. We can’t wait to see what this exceptional next chapter has in store.
Sincerely,
Sean Duncan
